GERD/Reflux
GERD, also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, is characterized by heartburn with a burning sensation in the throat and chest. GERD is caused by acid from the stomach being exposed to the sensitive lining of the esophagus, most often due to a weakening of the muscle at the junction of the esophagus and the stomach. Over time, scarring and precancerous changes can occur in the lower esophagus due to the increased acid exposure. Additionally, esophageal cancer occurs more commonly in people with GERD. Many people can control the symptoms of GERD with medications. However, some people have persistent heartburn despite medications, or have secondary symptoms such as gagging or asthma related to the continued reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus. In this situation, surgical treatment of GERD can usually help.
Should your GERD require surgery, the Loveland Surgical Associates team will discuss options ranging from incisionless surgery to laparoscopic repair of the lower esophagus to help control your disease.
