Carotid Artery Surgery
The right and left carotid arteries are the primary source of arterial blood supply to the brain. These arteries originate in the upper chest and traverse through the neck. As these vessels give off branches within the neck, areas of atherosclerotic plaque can build up, and narrow the carotid arteries. As the vessel becomes narrowed, the flow within the vessel increases, and turbulence occurs which can cause the plaque to break loose and travel into the brain, and potentially causing a stroke. Strokes can cause permanent disability, and about 20% of strokes are due to carotid artery plaque disease.
Carotid artery surgery (carotid endarterectomy) involves removal of the built-up plaque in the carotid artery and can reduce the risk of stroke in some individuals. The surgeons of Loveland Surgical Associates will gladly discuss disease of the carotid arteries and help you understand your surgical and non-surgical options to best limit your risk of stroke.
