Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer

Unfortunately, breast cancer is becoming more common in our society. Public awareness, routine performance of self-breast exams, and improved screening with mammography now allow many breast cancers to be diagnosed early, and thus there is now improved survival for many women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Care of breast cancer involves a team of physicians, including medical oncologists who manage chemotherapy issues, radiation oncologists who provide radiation treatment when necessary, and surgeons who specialize in removal of the cancer whenever possible. At times, plastic surgeons are also involved in reconstructive aspects of breast cancer care.

There are many factors to consider when determining the best surgical approach for breast cancer. The amount of tissue to be removed and the tumor’s characteristics should be considered, as well as whether the cancer has spread beyond the breast.

Options for surgical management of breast cancer include:

• Lumpectomy – removing the cancerous mass and some surrounding normal tissue
• Mastectomy – removal of the entire breast
• Modified radical mastectomy – removal of the entire breast and lymph nodes within the armpit (axilla)
• Axillary Lymph Node Dissection – removal of the lymph nodes within the axilla
• Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy – removal of the first 1-3 lymph nodes within the axilla that drain the breast

Receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer creates an emotional time for patients and families. The surgeons of Loveland Surgical Associates strive to provide not only expert surgical care of the cancer, but educational resources and consultation with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons, and support staff specializing in cancer management whenever needed.
